Sunday Salon

It has been a difficult week to read around here. With sky high temperatures, a freak lightening storm that started another fire up in the hills, and our anniversary yesterday I haven't been doing much reading.

But I made a few purchases and here they are:

I am so excited to read Nefertiti. We are actually planning a trip to Egypt in the next year or two. My husband has cousins that are half Egyptian who live there half the time and here in the U.S. half the time. Even so, Jim has always been fascinated with Egyptian history and artifacts. I have spent hours in the Rosicrucian Museum in San Jose and walking around the spectacular Egyptian themed grounds. What a fascinating culture!

Yesterday I read a few stories out of The Philip K. Dick Reader. Several of his Sci-Fi stories were made into movies like Blade Runner, Total Recall, and Minority Report. What an imagination that man had along with the ability to capture them into highly readable stories. It was a fun afternoon.

I just started Grotesque by Natsuo Kirino last night and it already grabbed me. It is about a biracial family with two very different sisters. The beautiful one becomes a prostitute and is murdered a year before the other sister's classmate, also a prostitute is murdered in the same way. Not a bad beginning.

Well I must run. I missed getting a bunch of things at Costco the other day and have to go back. I got sidetracked by the food samples!

Have a great week everyone!

I keep reading about Nefertiti - it seems as though I'll have to find a copy.

You have a nice stack of books there. Enjoy your reading.

yay, new books! I've only read Anansi Boys, which I loved, but the others sound good too. I really need to get myself a copy of Nefertiti.

Happy anniversary, Jaimie! We've had our share of hot weather down my way too. It's supposed to be another scorcher today. I plan to stay cool inside and maybe get some reading in.

A very nice stack of books! I really enjoyed the one Christopher Rice book I have read. I have The Snow Garden on my shelf waiting its turn still.

Ruth Rendell is an author I keep meaning to try. I've heard good things about her.

I do hope you like Nefertiti. Your trip to Egypt sounds like it will be fun. It is such a fascinating culture, especially in regards to the country's history.

Blade Runner is one of my husband's favorite movies, but I don't know if he's yet read the book the movie was based on. I noticed Philip K. Dick got a little write up in Bookmarks magazine recently. It's good to see the magazine taking a look at science fiction.

Have a great week, Jaimie.

I've just decided not to go on with 'Nefertiti'. There wasn't anything wrong with it, but there wasn't anything remarkable about it either. If I'd had a great interest in Egypt then it might have made a difference, but as I haven't I've decide to move onto to one of the other many books on the shelf. I'll be very interested to see if you enjoy it more than I did as I know a lot of people have thought very highly of it.

Booksplease - I'd be interested to see what you think of Nefertiti.

Nymeth - My husband grabbed Anansi Boys right away so I have to wait to read it! I read some good reviews on it.

Wendy - Thank you! It has finally cooled down a bit here. I am looking forward to reading Nefetiti and will link to your review as well.
Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? is the book that was made into Blade Runner. I haven't read it yet either and I'm glad to hear that Dick's work was mentioned in Bookmarks.
You have a good weekend too!

Table Talk - I'm glad you put down Nefertiti when it didn't interest you. So many people slog through books they don't like! Thanks for being candid about the book. I heard only good things which is very unusual. Now if I don't like it, I won't feel bad!

I haven't read any of the books you got, but it looks like a great stack!

Nefertiti sounds excellent.
I see Neil Gaiman on your TBR, I like his work.
Enjoy your weekend :)

Kristy - Most of the authors in the pile I have read before and they have been very reliable!

Bethany - I will be starting that one hopefully in the next couple of weeks. I want to clear my other obligations so I can really enjoy it.

Naida - Yes, Gaiman's work is excellent. I am looking forward to Nefertiti as well.

Nice stack of books you have there! I just picked up my first Jim Butcher book (Harry Dresden). Husband and I both enjoyed the TV show on SciFi channel, so thought I'd give it a try. Not sure if the author of Grotesque is the same as the author of Out (too lazy to go over and look at my stack), but the author name sounds familiar. And Philip K. Dick is a favorite around our house :o) Have fun reading!

Terri - Yes Natsuo Kirino wrote "Out" also. I read it a couple months ago and was very impressed. This one deals with school aged girls, at least so far but like the other, is raw and powerful.
I hope you are enjoying your first Jim Butcher book!

Happy anniversary, Jaimie!

What a great stack of books! :) I see you've bought Grave Peril and Nefertiti. I've heard raves about the latter so I'll definitely go get that book!

Egypt sounds like an interesting place to visit! I'd love to visit that country one day if there's a chance! :)

Let me know how the Nefertiti book is. I really would like to read it. Egyptian history is really interesting. I should start reading the books that I have again.

Melody - Thanks! Yes, Grave Peril is next in line in the series. We love it! I can't wait to read Nefertiti and even more excited to finally go to Egypt. It will be a trip to remember!

Elizabeth - I can loan it to you when you come down but if I really love it will buy you your own copy!

I have Grotesque on my pile, too. I almost started it, but my library pile got so out of control I decided to wait. I actually took almost all my library books bck and hope to work on my own pile of books for a while! I really liked Nature of Monsters as well. Enjoy your stack--you have some good ones there!

Jaimie said...

Lezlie - Great! I will also link to your review when I do mine, if that is ok with you.

Danielle - I remember your review on The Nture of Monsters and have been waiting for the paperback to come out. I know the feeling with the out of control book pile!

That would be great! I'll link your's, too, whenever you get one done.

Thanks!

Great stack of books! Happy anniversary! Hope it cools off soon--we're having insane heat down here, too, but fortunately no fires...yet...

I'd forgotten about Philip K. Dick. I'm going to have to pick him up again--Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? is a the masterpiece from which Blade Runner is adapted.

Gentle Reader - Thanks! It finally cooled off up here, thank goodness and the fires are out.

j.d. - That is a great book! There were a couple more full length books by him that I hadn't heard of. His short stories are awesome!

Hi Jaimie,

Let's see....I'm about 120 pages
into the first book by Deanna
Raybourn and I'm loving it!! It's
such a great mystery, but it's
the eccentric characters and the
dry humor that I'm loving most.

I have the Nefertiti book on my
wish list and will get it the
next time I am stocking up. I've
heard (read) good things about
this one.

Oh lucky you getting to go to
Egypt!! I've been fascinated by
Pharaohs, pyramids and mummys
forever and have a few books on
the subject. Pauline Gedge is
usually my go-to author for
books based on Egyptian history.

I plan on getting more Sarah
Waters books too, since
Fingersmith turned out to be
such a fantastic read.

I've been thinking of giving
Jim Butcher a try too.

I've been reading about the
fires you've got raging in
California right now. Hope
you and your family don't
have any worries in that
regard.

Have a great Fourth of July,
and happy reading!!

Cheers

Well hey there Crazee Lady! How are you doing?
I'm so glad you are enjoying your Deanna Raybourn book. I love the dry humor too!
The fires have spread ash everywhere but they are finally out in our area.
Enjoy your reading and have a great Fourth of July!
